Editorial Director

Position Overview:
HealthCom Media (HCM) is seeking an experienced Editorial Director (ED) to lead its editorial team and oversee the editorial operations for both print and online content. This leadership role requires a visionary individual with a strong editorial background in healthcare publishing, a passion for clinical accuracy, and the ability to drive content strategies that engage and educate our audience of nursing professionals.

As the Editorial Director, you will be responsible for ensuring the clinical relevance, timeliness, and quality of all content published across HCM’s platforms. You will lead editorial strategy, manage editorial content and staff, collaborate with internal and external partners, and maintain editorial ethics based on established guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Editorial Strategy & Content Development: Oversee and direct editorial content strategy, ensuring all content meets high journalistic standards, aligns with the needs of nursing professionals, and supports the publication’s business goals.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Publishing Directors to develop editorial and sponsored content, balancing both editorial integrity and business revenue targets.
  • Content Management: Manage the editorial calendar, generate topic ideas, solicit articles, and ensure timely publication of print and digital issues.
  • Quality Control: Oversee peer-review processes, including manuscript evaluation and revisions, ensuring clinical accuracy in all formats (print, digital, special projects).
  • Team Leadership: Direct and supervise editorial staff and freelancers, fostering collaboration and ensuring high standards for editorial quality.
  • Social Media & Digital Strategy: Lead the development of the social media strategy, incorporating digital content such as blogs, videos, podcasts, and online features.
  • Continuing Education (CNE): Plan and create CNE content, write posttests, and manage all necessary documentation to meet accreditation standards.
  • Budget & Workflow: Collaborate on editorial budgets, manage editorial workflows, and ensure production deadlines are met.
  • Ethical Standards: Develop and uphold editorial and publication ethics policies to ensure compliance with industry standards.

Qualifications:

  • Education: MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), with preference given to candidates with experience in healthcare journalism, English, or communications.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of editorial experience, ideally within healthcare publications, including experience managing editorial content and teams.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office Suite; experience with editorial project management tools such as Basecamp is a plus.

  • In-depth understanding of healthcare trends, nursing issues, and clinical content.
  • Familiarity with editorial review processes and the ability to manage peer review and manuscript submission systems.
  • Ability to balance editorial integrity with business goals and revenue generation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Represent HCM in editorial meetings and conferences.
  • Organize focus groups and analyze reader feedback to inform content strategy.
  • Develop and manage editorial board updates and recruit new members.
  • Handle all aspects of author and peer reviewer communications, including manuscript submission, revisions, and feedback.
  • Write content for special projects, including webinars, blog posts, and other digital initiatives.
